Day 1: Calgary to Jasper via the Icefields Parkway

Overview: This is a full-day scenic drive covering approximately 4.5 hours of pure driving time. With stops, expect an 8–9 hour day. Plan for frequent breaks. The Icefields Parkway is one of the world’s most spectacular drives, so take your time and enjoy the views[reference:8].

Morning: Arrival & Groceries

  • Arrive at YYC: Pick up your rental vehicles and install car seats.
  • Grocery Stop: Stop at a grocery store in Canmore (e.g., IGA) to stock up on snacks, water, and picnic supplies for the next few days. This is a good opportunity to stretch legs and feed the baby.

Midday: Lakes and Picnic

  • Peyto Lake: A short, 200m paved trail leads to a stunning viewpoint. It is stroller-friendly and a great spot for a family photo[reference:9].
  • Bow Lake: Enjoy a picnic lunch with a view of the glacier-fed lake.

Afternoon & Evening: Waterfalls and Jasper

  • Scenic Drive to Jasper: 3-hour drive. Enjoy the drive. Keep an eye out for wildlife from inside your vehicle.
  • Athabasca Falls: A powerful and easily accessible waterfall. The viewing areas have concrete railings.
  • Sunwapta Falls: Another beautiful waterfall, especially in the golden hour. There is a safe bridge for viewing.
  • Check-in to Jasper Accommodation: Settle in and enjoy a relaxed dinner.

Do’s & Don’ts for Families

  • Do pack a picnic lunch to save time and money.
  • Do keep snacks and water easily accessible in the car.
  • Do stop every 60–90 minutes to let everyone stretch.
  • Don’t rush the drive. The stops are the highlight of the day.
  • Don’t approach or feed any wildlife. View them only from the safety of your vehicle.
