Day 3: Jasper to Calgary via the Columbia Icefield

Overview: This is a travel day that includes one of the trip’s most unique experiences: walking on a glacier. Be prepared for cold and windy conditions, even in summer. The drive from Jasper to Calgary via the Icefields Parkway is about 5 hours, so this is a long day.

Morning: Journey to the Glacier

  • Drive to Columbia Icefield: A 1.5-hour drive from Jasper.
  • Ice Explorer Truck: Board a specialized vehicle for a 1.5-hour tour onto the Athabasca Glacier. Dress everyone in warm layers, including snow pants, mitts, and toques. Pre-booking is essential.

Afternoon: Skywalk & Drive to Calgary

  • Lunch at Discovery Centre: A warm, indoor meal is a welcome break after the glacier.
  • Drive to Calgary: 3.5-hour drive.
  • Check-in to Calgary Accommodation: Settle in and enjoy an easy dinner.

** Do’s & Don’ts for Families**

  • Do pack a dedicated bag with winter gear for the glacier visit.
  • Do bring snacks and entertainment for the long drive to Calgary.
  • Don’t underestimate the cold on the glacier. It is significantly colder than the townsite.
  • Don’t forget to bring a carrier for the s, inf any, as strollers are not practical on the Ice Explorer or Skywalk.
