Understanding Ontario School Assessments (EQAO & OSSLT)

What is EQAO?
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) administers provincial assessments in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics for students in Grades 3 and 6, and Mathematics for Grade 9. These assessments measure how well students are meeting provincial curriculum expectations and focus on problem-solving, critical thinking, and application of knowledge.

What is the OSSLT?
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a Grade 10 assessment that focuses on literacy skills across all subjects. Successfully completing the OSSLT is a graduation requirement for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Key Details for Families

  • Format: The OSSLT is computer-based and consists of two sessions. It is scored on a scale of 200 to 400, with 300 being the pass mark.

  • Preparation: EQAO offers online practice tests and hosts live webinars for parents. Schools may also provide preparation materials.

  • Results: EQAO assessments are separate from regular classroom evaluation and do not directly affect report card grades.
